Headshots for Organists, with Timothy Zimmerman

Matthew Stein on Sep 29, 2013 7:16:00 PM

New headshots needed.

Timothy Zimmerman needed some fresh headshots for his European tour.

This October, from the 15th through the 28th, Timothy will be playing his way across the continent. He is concertizing in Dresden, Germany, Vienna, Austria and Angers, France. The French concert will be broadcast live over French National Radio.

He teaches Organ on faculty at Boston College, and is the associate director of Music at St. Ignatius Chapel.

The setup was pretty easy.

Rock Climbing around Boston

Matthew Stein on Jun 6, 2013 12:15:00 PM

60 feet off the ground.

All your weight is supported by a tiny ledge that only sticks out a measly quarter of an inch. You are 6 feet above your last clip, trying to make the last one. Three more moves to the top of the climb where you can clip in to the last bolt, claim victory, and rappel down to celebrate. If you blow one of those moves, you will fall 12 feet, plus rope stretch, and have to redo the crux all over again.

Porchfest in Somerville

Porchfest 2013 - Somerville, Mass.

People piled out onto the streets, and listened for the far off sound of their neighbors. Amps and drum-sets set out on the porch, the bands struck up a tune while the masses ambled to their doors.

Adventure photography and snowboarding in Aspen

Breathing is hard.

Your feet barely move without enormous force of will.

Once you finally get the next step up, shifting your weight onto that leg takes considerable effort. And there are still 2 summits left to the top. Why the hell would anyone lug 30 lbs of camera gear up here? Oh yeah, for shots like these.

The importance of using Photoflo

Clouds live outside.

Clouds don't belong in indoor pictures. This was taken on stage just before Newpoli played their Christmas concert in 2012. Unless someone painted clouds on the ceiling above the mezzanine, something else must be wrong. And it's probably my fault.

Lilacs from King's Tree Farm

Matthew Stein on May 21, 2013 4:06:00 PM

Lilacs smell like spring.

Springtime in Boston always comes late for me. As a North Carolinian, I think flowers should start blooming in March. This business of waiting until May throws me off every year. Once the last of the grey piles of snow have melted from nearby parking lots, we finally get to see New England at its best. One of my favorite flowering trees are the lilacs.

Painting with light

Matthew Stein on May 17, 2013 12:00:00 PM

Photographs evolve into out of darkness. Paintings begin with a white canvas. Our origins come from opposite ends of the spectrum and meet in the middle to create our images. This is all about how I like to use the origin of darkness to clarify my message in photography.

How I learned to love the blur.

Matthew Stein on May 16, 2013 12:42:00 PM

I would delete pictures like these. If something had too much camera shake, I'd hate the picture. And then I slowly began to realize how this kind of speed blur can mean something more. It brings emotion to the shot, and adds some timey-wimey-ness to an otherwise fixed point in time.

What not to do when developing film

Matthew Stein on May 15, 2013 5:07:00 PM

Amateur mistakes. Sheesh.

Anyone can rattle off a dozen advantages of shooting digital over film, and some people can even name a few advantages of film over digital. Recently I developed my first roll of film in my basement. Yep, I ordered the chemicals, developing tank and reels, and went to town. Here's one of the mistakes I made, and you can hopefully learn from it.

Headshots for instrumentalists

Last week I wrapped up some head shots for a great friend, Liza Malamut. She's working on her DMA at BU, and plays the Sackbut and modern trombone.
